The Challenge: AI Tools in Sensitive Environments

As AI platforms become increasingly integrated into day-to-day workflows, organisations in regulated and sensitive sectors must tread carefully. For our client, a leading MedTech research organisation, the potential for AI to accelerate insight, automate tasks, and streamline collaboration was appealing.

However, with sensitive data and strict compliance obligations, jumping in without a security assessment was not an option. Our client needed to know whether any chosen tool, in their specific environment and use case, could be safely deployed. And they needed confidence that its configuration, licensing, and controls were watertight.

The Approach: Applying Kompela’s Security Lens

Based on our experience in data security and compliance, Kompela was selected to assess the organisation’s readiness to adopt AI securely. We began by understanding the client’s intended use case for their chosen product; where, how, and by whom it would be used. We mapped this against data sensitivity, access controls, and risk tolerance.

We then deployed our weighted, risk-based security posture analysis template, a Kompela-designed methodology that evaluates AI tools across key domains including:

• Data governance and handling
• Model training safeguards and risk exposure
• Configuration and licensing
• Identity, access, and role-based controls
• Regulatory alignment and auditability

Each element was scored and colour-coded (Red, Amber, Green), delivering a clear visual risk profile and an overarching “safe-to-use” score.

The Result: Confidence in AI, Backed by Data

Through our assessment, we identified specific areas of strength, such as robust tenant-wide data protections—and recommended targeted improvements.

Key deliverables included:
